BLDC#6 Which design is better? 9s10p Vs 12s10p

For a BLDC motor, Flux linkage between the rotor and stator is maximum when number of poles(p) and number of slots(Ns) are equal in number. Because of the circular shape and winding layout challenges it is not possible to design a motor where these two numbers are equal. What one can do, minimize the difference between the two, to keep the max possible flux linkage.

Minimizing the difference between the Ns and p brings two advantages

  • reduction in cogging torque (reduces the torque and speed ripples, hence 9s10p performs better)
  • more trapezoidal shape of back-emf (9s10p promises a bit higher avg torque as compared to the 12s10p)

More to come soon..........
